It has recently come to light that Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service has received licensing approval for its user terminals from the U.K.’s communications regulator. The green light given to the Starlink broadband system will allow Musk to compete with terrestrial U.K. Internet providers like BT Group Plc and others including Inmarsat Group Holdings, OneWeb, etc.
As reported by Business Insider, users in the UK who signed up for SpaceX’s “Better Than Nothing Beta” test have started receiving the Starlink kit. It costs £439 upfront, plus £84, for a monthly subscription. The authorization was granted to Starlink back in November last year, according to Ofcom spokesman.
For the uninitiated, Starlink is a satellite internet company developed by Elon Musk’s space-exploration company SpaceX. With the help of Starlink, Musk aims to launch 42,000 small satellites in low Earth orbit. These will help transmit fast internet signals to the earth and help provide superfast internet connections across the globe.
Apart from the UK, Greece, Germany, and Australia have also approved the new system. Also, Starlink has already started testing a beta service in North America where the company has launched hundreds of satellites.
